Some Other MSM Powder Benefits
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur compound that occurs naturally and can be found in many organisms. It is also known as Dimethyl Sulfone, which is its chemical name. It exists in a crystalline powder form that is odorless, white in color and is extremely soluble, especially in hot water and other organic solvents. It can be found in the body’s tissues in fairly high concentrations, with the majority of it being found in the body’s muscles. The remainder of it will be found in the hair, bones and skin. The amount of MSM that can be found in a male adult is approximately 0.2 mg/kg with about 4 to 11 mg passing out of the body through urine.
MSM is not produced by the body and can only be obtained through food or supplements. Without it, the body would not be able to function properly, and eventually will shut down completely. This is because the role of MSM in the body is that of a potentiator for the majority of vitamins and nutrients our bodies need such as vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E, the B- vitamins, Co-enzyme Q10, magnesium, calcium, amino acids and a very wide range of other important minerals and enzymes. The role of these vitamins is essential in order for our bodies to function. Take the example of vitamin A, which is required in the eyeís retina for us to have scotopic and color vision. It also plays a very important factor in the growth of epithelial and other cells. Another example of MSM’s importance as a potentiator is for the Co-enzyme Q 10, which our bodiesí cells require for them to produce energy. The human body generates 90% of its energy from this, and in particular, the body’s highest users of this energy are the vital organs such as the heart, kidney and liver. In the absence of MSM, the body would not be able to utilize co-enzyme Q 10 efficiently, resulting in the vital organs not functioning properly. This could inevitably lead to other complications, which could have severe consequences.
MSM also helps the body by improving its ability to utilize calcium. Calcium is very important to the body, not only as part of a healthy diet, but as a mineral that is necessary for life. The body stores approximately 90% of calcium in the bones and teeth. The correct amount of calcium is absolutely essential in order to have strong and dense bones. A lack of calcium may also lead to osteoporosis, which is a condition where the body’s bones deteriorate as a result of calcium deficiency, thus being more prone to fractures. MSM may be able to help reduce the onset of osteoporosis as it allows the body to utilize any calcium derived from food or supplements. This is one of the reasons why some sufferers of osteoporosis include supplements that contain MSM as part of their treatment. Another way in which MSM helps the body absorb calcium is through its ability to act as a potentiator for vitamin D. This is because the body converts vitamin D into a hormone that can induce the synthesis of certain intestinal proteins. These proteins are then able to help facilitate the absorption of calcium.
Researchers have found that MSM can also help to protect against allergens and other types of parasites. This is because MSM has shown that after ingestion, it becomes bound to the mucosa. Surfaces that have a mucous membrane such as the respiratory system or intestinal organs will benefit from its blocking interface between hosts and allergens. Several researchers have pointed out that it may also work as a histamine inhibitor, which would help those who suffer from allergies. It may also help alleviate these allergies due to its detoxification properties. MSM also increases the permeability of cells, allowing more oxygen to be absorbed and then circulated through the body. This process will allow the body to repair itself more effectively and provide oxygen to much needed areas of the body.
Clinical trials on non-humans have been favorable and suggest that there are a number of conditions that can be treated with it. One such example is arthritis, where there are a number of inflammations that arise from autoimmune reactions. A number of studies have shown that MSM could significantly reduce any inflammation or degeneration of the joints. One particular experiment was performed on specially bred laboratory mice that had two months of age and whose type was particularly susceptible to the development of rheumatoid arthritis. During a period of three months, one group of these mice were consistently provided 3% solution of MSM. During this time, it was found that the articular cartilage had suffered no degeneration. However, 50% of mice in the second group that were not given MSM (control group) showed signs of degeneration, and from this same group, 95% were observed to have an inflammatory reaction of the synovial tissues. In comparison, only 50% of the MSM group showed a lesser form of inflammatory reaction. This is of particular importance because other studies which have utilized MSM on humans, have reported that it provided relief for them. As a result of this, many patients who suffer from arthritis also utilize supplements that contain MSM.
Other experiments have pointed out that the use of MSM could possibly reduce the onset of cancer. The results are not fully conclusive as the tests were only performed utilizing specially bred rats that were particularly susceptible to breast cancer. The results showed that those rats, which were given an oral dose of MSM, developed cancerous cells and tumors approximately 100 days later than the control group. It was also noted that there was no difference to the amount of tumors that developed. There is still a lot more research that needs to be done before certain benefits can be confirmed for humans. However, MSM can still be utilized for a wide range of other benefits, and can be taken on a daily basis as a supplement alongside other nutritional diets, or even with other vitamins.
